Topics You Should Avoid on a First Date

By now, you are probably experiencing what everyone feels with another passing valentines day, loneliness. It feels like we are all absolutely fine with being single, that is until valentine’s day rolls by and we are all reminded that we are incredibly single.

It is very common for people to head back onto the dating scene after valentines and if you have stumbled across this article then it is likely that you are one of these people.

If you haven’t been to many dates for some time, then you probably feel lost on how to approach a date. The dating game has changed a lot in the last few years and it is not the same as it once was. A big part of this is a change in social issues and the topics that are now ok to discuss when you are on a date.

If you have recently been on a date and you have found yourself tripping over yourself and discussing things that you probably shouldn’t have spoken about. Before you head on your next date, it is likely that you want to be more prepared. A big part of the preparation is knowing what is ok to talk about and what you should avoid. Here are just some of the topics that you should avoid on a first date.

Religion

If you are someone that considers yourself to be religious, then this may be something that you consider to be very important. However, this is something that you should avoid talking about on your first date. If you are very devout, then you should inform your date about this before you even meet, as it is likely that you will want to be with someone of the same religion.

If you are not someone that is religious, but you have some strong opinions on religion, then it is important that you keep these opinions to yourself at the start of your meeting.

Your date may share the same opinions of you, but it can be incredibly preachy and even intimidating when people share their strong opinions on religion. The last thing that you want to do is alienate your date and the topic will not make your date feel comfortable at all. If you do want to know your date’s opinion on the matter, this is something that can be discussed in the future when you are more comfortable with each other and it will be far less intimidating.

Dark Humour

If you think back to the 2000s, dark humour and on the nose jokes were very popular and a lot of people enjoyed them. However, the world has become much more politically correct since then and some things that you could joke about back then you can no longer joke about.

There are some topics that should be avoided completely out of respect for certain groups and minorities. When people are nervous, they tend to turn to comedy to try and make the situation far less awkward. This is a good idea, as comedy is a great way to break the ice and make people feel more comfortable.

If you do enjoy dark humour and you are more comfortable with telling darker jokes, I would recommend that you avoid very dark jokes as this may make your date uncomfortable. You can still tell some jokes with a bit of an edge, but it is probably in your best interest to be a bit tame with your joke and avoid saying anything that may make your date feel out of place.

Children and Marriage

Depending on your age, a priority that you may have in the world of dating is finding someone that is interested in marriage and maybe even having children one day. If you are dead set on eventually getting married, then you may be worried about wasting time with someone who isn’t interested and so you may feel inclined to ask on the first date.

Even if your date is interested in one day having a family or getting married, bringing it up so soon can be very scary and may intimidate them. Like other topics, you could always bring it up to them much later when you are more comfortable with each other.
